However, due to its high mana cost and the risk of losing your own permanents, it may not be the most competitive choice compared to other cards like Griselbrand, which provide immediate value without such drawbacks, making Rakdos the Defiler more of a niche card for casual or themed decks rather than a staple in competitive play.

To calculate the number of permanents that must be sacrificed, count the number of permanents the affected player controls that don’t have the subtype Demon, then divide that number in half and round up. For example, a player who controls eleven non-Demon permanents will need to sacrifice six of them.
