Smokebraider is vooral nuttig in een kaartspel met Elemental-thema, vooral in formaten als Modern of Commander, waar Elementals een centrale strategie kunnen zijn, waardoor explosief spel mogelijk wordt door snel krachtige Elemental-spreuken uit te voeren. Hoewel er andere mana-producerende kaarten zijn die meer dan twee mana kunnen genereren of veelzijdiger zijn, zoals Farseek of Cultivate, die kunnen helpen bij het fixeren en opvoeren van mana in een breder scala aan decks, zorgt Smokebraiders vermogen om specifiek elementaire synergieën te verbeteren ervoor dat het een unieke keuze. Het zou gespeeld moeten worden in speciale Elemental-decks, waar het vermogen om mana specifiek voor Elemental-spreuken te genereren tot aanzienlijke tempovoordelen kan leiden.
