Tendrils of Corruption, Instant, designed by Mike Dringenberg first released in Oct, 2006 in the set Time Spiral and was printed exactly in 10 different ways.
A mono-black control deck with a heavy focus on swamps would benefit the most from Tendrils of Corruption, as it can provide a significant swing in life total while also removing a threat on the board. However, there are better options like Murderous Rider, which offers more versatility with its creature and planeswalker removal, as well as the ability to be recast from the graveyard. Tendrils of Corruption could see play in certain niche strategies, but overall, there are more efficient removal options available in the current Magic: the Gathering card pool.

If the target creature is an illegal target by the time Tendrils of Corruption tries to resolve, the spell doesn’t resolve. You don’t gain X life.

The amount of life you gain is equal to the number of Swamps you control, not the amount of damage Tendrils of Corruption deals (in case some of it is prevented).
