About Disciple of Phenax

Disciple of Phenax, Creature — human cleric, designed by John Severin Brassell first released in May, 2020 in the set Theros and was printed exactly in 2 different ways.

A deck that focuses on controlling the opponent's hand and disrupting their game plan would benefit from including Disciple of Phenax, as it allows for targeted discard based on devotion to black, potentially stripping away key cards from the opponent's hand. However, there are arguably better cards for this purpose in formats like Modern and Legacy, such as Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek, which offer more immediate and efficient hand disruption. Whether or not Disciple of Phenax should see play depends on the specific strategy and format of the deck, but it can still be a viable option in certain situations.

Rules

09/15/13

If an activated ability or triggered ability has an effect that depends on your devotion to a color, you count the number of mana symbols of that color among the mana costs of permanents you control as the ability resolves. The permanent with that ability will be counted if it’s still on the battlefield at that time.

09/15/13

Mana symbols in the text boxes of permanents you control don’t count toward your devotion to any color.

09/15/13

Use your devotion to black as the triggered ability resolves to determine how many cards will be revealed. If Disciple of Phenax is still on the battlefield at that time, its mana cost will count toward your devotion to black.
