About Proud Mentor

Proud Mentor would be a valuable addition to a white-based control or tempo deck that focuses on tapping down key threats to gain board advantage. While it offers utility with its Partner ability and tapping ability, there may be more efficient options available such as cards like Lavinia, Azorius Renegade or Reflector Mage which provide similar effects with additional benefits. Whether Proud Mentor sees play would depend on the specific strategy and synergy of the deck, but it could be a solid inclusion in the right build.

The value of X is determined only as Impetuous Protege’s last ability resolves. Once that happens, the value of X won’t change later in the turn even if the greatest power among your opponents’ tapped creatures changes.
