About Everlasting Torment
Everlasting Torment, Enchantment, designed by Richard Kane Ferguson first released in May, 2008 in the set Shadowmoor and was printed exactly in 3 different ways. It's a key card in 1 combos.
A deck focused on aggressive strategies that aim to deal damage quickly and efficiently would benefit from using Everlasting Torment, as it shuts down life gain and prevention effects while also making all damage more permanent with the wither ability. However, there are better options for similar effects such as Tainted Remedy for life gain prevention or Grafted Exoskeleton for a more aggressive approach, so Everlasting Torment may not see as much play in competitive decks but could still be a strong choice in certain metagames or casual play.
Rules
05/01/08
Effects that would replace gaining life with some other effect won’t be able to do anything because it’s impossible for players to gain life.
05/01/08
If an effect says to set your life total to a certain number, and that number is higher than your current life total, that effect will normally cause you to gain life equal to the difference. With Everlasting Torment on the battlefield, that part of the effect won’t do anything. (If the number is lower than your current life total, the effect will work as normal.)
05/01/08
Spells and abilities that replace or redirect damage aren’t affected by Everlasting Torment’s second ability. They’ll work as normal.
05/01/08
Spells and abilities that would normally cause a player to gain life still resolve, but the life-gain part simply has no effect.
