About Tar Fiend
Tar Fiend, Creature — elemental, designed by Anthony S. Waters first released in Oct, 2008 in the set Shards of Alara.
A deck focused on sacrificing creatures for value, such as a sacrifice or graveyard-based deck, would benefit from including Tar Fiend as it can provide card advantage by making the opponent discard cards while also growing in power. However, there are potentially better cards for similar effects, like Grave Titan or Abyssal Persecutor, which offer more immediate impact or resilience. Tar Fiend could see play in specific strategies that can take advantage of its abilities, but it may not be a staple in most competitive decks due to its high mana cost and situational nature.
Rules
10/01/08
You may choose not to sacrifice any creatures for the Devour ability.
10/01/08
You may sacrifice only creatures that are already on the battlefield. If a creature with devour and another creature are entering the battlefield under your control at the same time, the creature with devour can’t devour that other creature. The creature with devour also can’t devour itself.
