Surgespanner would be beneficial in a tempo-based Merfolk tribal deck in Magic: the Gathering, where bouncing opponent's permanents can disrupt their strategy and maintain board control. While Surgespanner is a decent option, a more popular and versatile alternative would be Harbinger of the Tides, which can also bounce creatures and has a lower mana cost. However, depending on the specific strategy and synergies of the deck, Surgespanner could still see play as a niche card for certain metas or playstyles.

This is a triggered ability, not an activated ability. It doesn’t allow you to tap the creature whenever you want; rather, you need some other way of tapping it, such as by attacking with the creature.
