A deck that focuses on maintaining a higher life total than its opponents, such as a control or stax deck, would benefit from using Repay in Kind. However, there are better cards like Exquisite Blood that can more directly manipulate life totals to your advantage. Repay in Kind could see play in niche strategies that revolve around life total manipulation or as a surprise finisher, but its high mana cost and situational nature may limit its overall effectiveness in competitive play.

For a player’s life total to become a certain number that’s lower than their current life total, what actually happens is that the player loses the appropriate amount of life. For example, if the lowest life total in the game is 5 and another player has 12 life, Repay in Kind will cause that player to lose 7 life. Abilities that interact with life loss will interact with this effect accordingly.
