A deck that benefits from explosive, unpredictable plays and enjoys casting multiple spells in a turn, such as a combo or control deck, would find Maelstrom Nexus valuable for its cascade ability. While Maelstrom Nexus can lead to exciting and powerful turns, it may be considered too slow and risky for competitive play due to its high mana cost and reliance on luck. Other cards like Maelstrom Pulse or Maelstrom Wanderer might offer more consistent and immediate value in certain strategies.

A spell’s converted mana cost is determined only by its mana cost. Ignore any alternative costs, additional costs, cost increases, or cost reductions. For example, Bloodbraid Elf’s converted mana cost is always 4.

The converted mana cost of a modal double-faced card in exile is that of its front face. If the last card you exile is a modal double-faced card, you may only cast the back face if the resulting spell would also have a lesser converted mana cost than the spell with cascade.

When the cascade ability resolves, you must exile cards. The only optional part of the ability is whether or not you cast the last card exiled.

This effect takes into account spells that were cast earlier in the turn before Maelstrom Nexus entered the battlefield, including any spells still on the stack. If you’ve already cast any spells that turn (including Maelstrom Nexus itself), this ability won’t give any of your spells cascade that turn.
