This card would be a great fit for a deck focused on utilizing infect mechanics to quickly take down opponents by dealing poison counters. However, there are better infect creatures available in Magic: the Gathering, such as Blight Mamba or Glistener Elf, which offer more efficient ways to spread poison counters. While Cystbearer may not be the top choice for competitive play, it can still be a fun addition to casual infect-themed decks.

If damage from a source with infect that would be dealt to a player is prevented, that player doesn’t get poison counters. If damage from a source with infect that would be dealt to a creature is prevented, that creature doesn’t get -1/-1 counters.

The -1/-1 counters remain on the creature indefinitely. They’re not removed if the creature regenerates or the turn ends.
